Unawatuna Beach Resort began life in 1980 as a discreet ten room property. It seems to emerge organically from the surrounding fishing village and it has kept its local roots even as it expanded to the present 63 rooms.
Local materials and techniques are used extensively, such as the thatch above the reception and palm woven mats that cover ceilings, cupboards and wardrobes. Constant maintenance ensures all remain in good condition. At the end of 1998 Unawatuna Beach Resort was fully refurbished and the resort was developed on the theme of a fishing village.
